Eurofish orangised a short webinar "Success stories from sustainable artisanal fisheries in Europe" on June 15 2022 from 10-12 CET in cooperation with FAO. The webinar featured a brief case study from the Adriatic Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, and the North Sea.
The importance of artisanal fisheries is recognized worldwide. Small-scale fisheries employ more than 90 percent of the world’s capture fishers. A thriving artisanal fisheries sector is crucial for local communities in those coastal rural areas which suffer from high unemployment rates and offer few other opportunities to earn a livelihood. Artisanal fisheries have been under pressure for years with limited fishing and market opportunities and stressed economies. Most nations in Europe support the artisanal fisheries sector with different measures and the focus of this webinar is to highlight the successful stories from Europe for the development of sustainable artisanal fisheries. The webinar can be used as inspiration for national development programs.
