Denmark: Danes enjoy traditional meal of cod on New Year's eve
Tuesday, 05 January 2010 09:45

Danish cod quotas in the North Sea, Kattegat, Skagerrak, as well as the eastern and western Baltic had not been completely fished by the middle of December suggesting that the traditional New Year's eve dinner of cod could be served in many homes if the weather permitted fishing, reports the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. Cod is a healthy and environmentally friendly choice of food said the Minister, Eva Kjer Hansen, and stocks in the North Sea, Kattegat, and the eastern Baltic have increased over the last two years. All stakeholders will have to continue to work hard to secure stocks for the future including by preventing the discard of fish, but the stocks are moving in the right direction showing that the EU's management plan is working. Danish quotas of cod from the Baltic Sea amount to just under 18,000 tonnes out of a total cod quota of 26,000 tonnes.
