Rimi Baltic adopts GlobalG.A.P standards
Friday, 08 June 2012 10:01

Rimi Baltic, a retailer with a significant presence in the three Baltic States, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, has become a member of GlobalG.A.P., a private sector body that sets voluntary standards for the certification of agricultural products. The standards apply both to the farm inputs such as feed, seeds, fertilisers etc. and all farming activities until the product leaves the farm. Certification to the standard is carried out by independent bodies who perform the annual audits and monitor compliance with unannounced inspections. GlobalG.A.P started as Eurepgap in 1997, an association of European retailers that felt the need to harmonise the often widely varying product safety, environment, and labour standards. With uniform standards producers were spared from having to undergo multiple audits as a single standard was now valid for different retailers. Eurepgap metamorphosed into GlobalG.A.P in 2004 in response to the increasing globalisation of food supply and distribution. Today GlobalG.A.P’s membership includes retailers, food service operators, and suppliers/producers. By joining, Rimi Baltic’s suppliers around the globe are committed to meeting the product safety, hygiene, and labour standards laid down by GlobalG.A.P.
