Improved version of hazard warning device developed
Wednesday, 14 April 2010 16:25
A device developed a decade ago to warn fishermen in UK waters of the presence of structures on the seabed related to the oil and gas industry that could be hazardous to fishing gear has recently been upgraded. The improved version of the FishSAFE unit features a twelve inch LCD colour screen with clearer graphics that can be viewed in bright sunlight and allows much more information about hazards to be accessed. The slimline unit is also housed in a more robust, waterproof casing to improve performance. The devise works by correlating the vessel’s position with a database that provides the location of oil and gas industry infrastructure such as pipelines and other equipment. If the vessel approaches a hazardous structure a system of alarms warns the skipper. The information in the database is updated every six months by simply inserting a memory card into the system. The equipment has been extensively tested on board the Whitby vessel, ‘Our Lass II’, and the Scottish trawlers, ‘Ellorah’, ‘Excel’ and ‘Harvest Hope.’ More information about the unit is available at www.fishsafe.eu.
