Under the Spanish EU Presidency the main priorities for the fisheries sector are the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy, which will be addressed in two Councils of Fisheries Ministers and in the informal meeting of Fisheries Ministers on 4th and 5th May in Vigo; setting a new multi-annual plan for certain fish stocks; and the reform of the Common Market Organization for fishery and aquaculture products.
Spain considers that the future Common Fisheries Policy must ensure the sustainability of fisheries and a decent level of income to fishermen, in order to keep jobs while supporting the coastal regions population dependent on fisheries. For this reason, economic activity must be raised under criteria of efficiency and competitiveness, while differentiating the social role played by the shellfish gatherers and the coastal fishing. The Common Fisheries Policy requires a new approach that takes into account social, economic, environmental and ecosystem, in addition to the integrated maritime policies.
