According to Ivars Janeks from the company Vergi, the groundwork for the new fish terminal Sarkanmuiža building has already started, reports the Latvian Fisheries Marketing and Information Centre. The new terminal is located on the former fisheries collective farm Banga, where at the moment workers are dismantling the old buildings.
The terminal will be used to land, sort, cool and process fresh fish. The terminal is expected to create 40-50 new jobs, which is sizeable for Ventspils, the smallest Latvian city with a population of 43,000. The terminal will be built by the company Samrode that won the tender to build the terminal. Weather conditions may yet influence the construction of the terminal – the ground is still frozen which delays sinking the piles. The project is supported by the European Fisheries Fund.
