Scottish company Hook Marine has developed a monitor that could help save fishermen’s lives by warning of vessel instability. The SeaWise Stability Monitor was developed following a study by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) that showed around 60 per cent of vessel losses at sea are due to foundering or capsizing.
The MAIB investigates all types of marine accidents to or on board UK ships worldwide, and other ships in UK territorial waters. The new monitor constantly tracks the roll of a vessel at sea and issues an early warning if a potentially hazardous situation appears to be developing. The development of SeaWise has been sponsored by the UK Sea Fish Industry Authority and it has undergone successful sea trials on different types of vessels. The monitor will be on display at the Fishing 2010 exhibition in Glasgow, 20-22 May, where one of the themes is safety on board.
